Food prices at the end of 2024 were 1.5 per cent higher than at the end of 2023, according to Statistics New Zealand
Grocery food prices increased by three per cent, driven by higher prices for butter, milk and olive oil. The price for a 500g block of butter increased by about 50 per cent, with an average price of $6.66 in December 2024 compared with $4.48 in December 2023.
Restaurant meals and ready-to-eat food also increased by three per cent, with fans of eating out paying more for brunch, lunch and dinners. Hamburgers were singled out as one item that cost more last year!
The only good news was that fruit and vegetables costs were eight per cent lower last year than in 2023, driven by lower prices for kūmara, potatoes, and onions, so you can start putting more fresh produce in your trolley. Here are some of our other tips for spending less at the supermarket.
